A Legacy of Leadership

Yesterday, the group of Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities (MICU), of which Northwood is a member, released a report on the economic footprint of the 25 independent schools in our state. The numbers were impressive, showing how the state’s private, not-for-profit schools generate $3.3 billion in economic impact annually. Further, MICU notes a national 2015 PayScale College ROI Report where Northwood University ranks fourth in the nation for “Best Value Business School” as we deliver a 10.1 percent annual ROI for our graduates—a full percentage higher than the prior year.

Giving back, whether through investments of time or money, is an important part of who we are at Northwood. We routinely “Go MAD,” Go Make A Difference. We are proud to be part of a group of institutions who support the state where they are based. We are proud of our recently launched Robert C. and Janice S. McNair Center for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, our think tank focused on the advocacy and expansion of free market economics and the cultivation of new entrepreneurs.

Michigan was also recently recognized as the home state of Betsy DeVos, newly confirmed U.S. Secretary of Education. The DeVos name is a familiar one here at Northwood, and one that has left a lasting legacy for many students. The DeVos’s have made contributions to our state and to our school which have fostered the entrepreneurial spirit of many students and set them on the path to success.

Here at Northwood, the Northwood Idea is what sets us apart from our peers, but also teaches us to work together to solve problems and to grow. The idea serves as our compass when challenges arise: shaping leaders with integrity, and students with a sense of responsibility for caring for their fellow humans.

With new leadership at the helm of education in this country, and strong support of the independent schools here in Michigan, Northwood is poised to continue this legacy of leadership.

Have a great weekend!
