Founders’ Day 2013!
Speakers, food, music, games, and fun all day long: that’s how I would describe Founders’ Day this year! Last year, as a committed high school senior, I was invited to Founders’ Day and I enjoyed it immensely, so I was very excited about this year, and it definitely met my expectations!
The day started with the Speaker’s series in the rotunda of Hopkins at 11:00. Some friends and I helped the Royal Ambassadors pass out programs and help get everyone seated. We then found our seats and settled in for quite the debate!
Randy Galloway, Dale Hansen, and Jordan Woy made up our panel of extremely successful and knowledgeable speakers for the sports entertainment industry. They discussed everything from Johnny Football, Robert Griffin III, whether they should be compensated, and what drives success in the industry.
Of course, even though we were all dressed up in our suits and ties, that didn’t mean we weren’t having fun. Galloway and Hansen joked around quite a bit while moderator Dennis McCuiston kept the atmosphere fresh and exciting. One of my favorite things from the panel was hearing Hansen say: Find what you love to do and figure out how to make money off of that. If you follow the job for your passion, then the money will come (I’m paraphrasing by the way. The way he said it was much more inspirational.)
After the panel ended, the students were off of classes all day and encouraged to join the festivities of Knights Fest! There was food, games, live music, a fashion show, and a car show!
The fashion show was put together by the fashion marketing students and hosted by Joshua Reyes and Sarah Martinez. The models (volunteer students) strutted the runway and showed off the sports apparel from Dick’s Sporting Goods in Cedar Hill.
The auto show was put together by Brandon Menes and featured everything from classic cars to big trucks to VW convertibles! There was a favorite car for every student out there!
Games included inflatable basketball, the mechanical bull, a photo booth, and a dunking booth! I rode the mechanical bull….for a total of ten seconds, and I needed help getting on in the first place. And a counselor I work with (whom I shared an embarrassing moment with) was in the dunking booth, so I finally had my sweet revenge!
And of course, what kind of people would we be if we didn’t take advantage of the beautiful weather and the great band by dancing?! We awkwardly thrusted our limbs and moved our hips in what we call “dancing” and the band even joined us!
After Knights Fest ended at 3:00, everyone took a break and rested for the rest of the day. Then the Faculty vs. Student Softball game began! I’ve never swung a bat in my life, so I wasn’t expecting to hit a homerun, but I sure had fun being in the dugout cheering on our team! (I struck out by the way). Student Coach Ozzie Gutierrez inspired our team with a speech and believed in us all the way!
“This is our chance to get back at all the teachers,” he said. “Our chance to get back for all the D’s they’ve given us, or given me at least, and all the time-outs they’ve ever put us in!”
Needless to say, the faculty put us in another time-out. They wiped the diamond with us. (To be fair, coaches and seniors were playing with them.)
The day ended with an all-American dinner of sausage on a stick, burgers, and ice cream!
Needless to say, Founders’ Day 2013 was a huge success! Everyone involved had a blast, and I can’t wait for next year!
