Expanding Our Experiences

Student posing with umbrellaAt the mid-point of the fall term we find ourselves very busy! Last week was an exciting one with numerous events planned by our students.

On Thursday, fashion marketing and management students hosted Mannequin Night in downtown Midland, a tradition that is nearly 30 years running. Students take to the windows of businesses along Main Street and pose like mannequins while members of the community snap photos and take in the designs. This year they enjoyed scenes of “Fashion in Technicolor” while spectators walked by. You can see photos from the event here.

Also last week, we celebrated what is becoming one of my favorite nights, a Taste of Culture. This event was special because all of the recipes were provided by current Northwood University international students. Food is a great way to experience diverse cultures and to learn more about one another.

Along those lines, this week Northwood’s Forum for Citizenship and Enterprise hosted a panel addressing the question “Is Islam compatible with a free society?” The conversation was led by three top scholars who all looked at the question through a different lens. This type of forum is so important for us because it encourages everyone to think through issues in multiple ways. I look forward to the next panel discussion and more engaging questions to get our students thinking about important issues facing our society.

Have a great weekend,
