President's Messages

This week, we have the privilege to honor seven exceptional women whom we at Northwood consider to be outstanding leaders and role models for our students. Our 2014 inductees for the Northwood University Distinguished Women’s Award are Laurie Cunnington, Tamara Darvish, Patti Hamilton, Donna Niester, Catherine Rodewald, Lynn Stinson and Martha Tiller.

Northwood University has something important in common with almost one million chicken dinners. We learned recently from Restaurant Business Magazine that two of Northwood University Trustees served more guests in their Frankenmuth restaurant last year than any other independently owned diner in the U.S.

We are especially excited about the upcoming week of October 27-31 when we’ll welcome two dozen of the world’s leading economists, entrepreneurs and political philosophers to our Midland campus for our inaugural Freedom Week.

The past weekend brought to mind the lyrics to the Fats Waller jazz favorite because our Midland campus was "really jumping" with activity. In addition to the 60,000+ visitors to the campus for the 51st Annual Northwood University International Auto Show – always a resounding success – we hosted an Admissions Open House Friday that drew more than 850 potential students, and their parents and teachers.

We’re “gearing-up” for another exceptional weekend as we open the 51st annual Northwood University International Auto Show (NUIAS) today on our Midland campus. This year’s theme - Take the Wheel - focuses on getting people into the driver’s seat of cars from all over the world.

Just as promising, the state was the top performer in the Great Lakes region based on a gross state product growth of 2.56% and in terms of new business starts-ups, ranking 20th this year, up from 48th in 2012. Michigan is on the way back! As you review the study in greater detail, I am sure you will see the natural connection between the study and Northwood University’s free enterprise business orientation.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs once said, “Creativity is just connecting things.” One of our priorities at Northwood University is to nurture our students to become inspired thinkers with the creativity and talent to prosper in a complex world.

Like The Northwood Idea, The Constitution of the United States of America is for all the people of our country.

In our fall Omniquest selection On the Edge, Alison Levine reminds us we live and work in a world filled with VUCA environments—Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. “Sound military practice,” writes Levine, “is based on the idea that a VUCA environment will sometimes require improvisation well outside the rules.” In other words, lead or get out of the way.
